ASHLEIGH SPIRES JFC

The head master of Ashleigh Comprehensive School Mr. David Fyfe decided that he wanted to give the boys of the school youth club something more to do at the weekend and so in 1970 Ashleigh United was formed.

Because Mr. Fyfe is a Sheffield United fan the team colours were naturally Red and White and the team name had to have united in it.

For many years the club did very well considering the limitations it had with only playing youth club members then around 1985 it was decided to offer places to players that were not members of the youth club so giving the managers a greater scope to choose from.

Then in 1989 with the merger of Ashleigh and Herfield schools the club changed it’s name from Ashleigh United to Ashleigh Spires to incorporate the name of Herfield’s team name.

Through the many changes in personnel, and players the club has always played on what is now the old school site on Gleadless Road, which with the imminent house building is where the club will continue to play.

Ashleigh is one of the oldest junior football clubs in the area and over the years many players have gone on to bigger and better things with most recently John Beresford and Tony Dawes plying their trade at professional level.

Over the years one thing that has always remained the same is the hard work and dedication from the team managers, committee members and assistance from parents to ensure that a group of young men can have a game of football on a Sunday morning because of this Ashleigh Spires has got an excellent reputation both on and off the pitch and long may this continue.
